SPOTLIGHT: David Muttimer’s aired-out Karmann Ghia

David’s Karmann Ghia drew no shortage of attention at Players 11, going home with a Players Winner trophy and the Meguiar’s Sponsors Choice Award.

For those who might not be familiar with the stunning Ghia silhouette, it’s actually a collaborative coach build that adapts the original Type 1 VW Beetle chassis into something more beautiful. Italy’s Carrozzeria Ghia was responsible for turning the unsporting proportions of the Beetle into a sleek 2+2 coupe, while German coach builder Karmann handmade the swooping exterior panels.

David, the owner of the particular vehicle, has taken this highly-customized mindset one step further and built his own Type 14 masterpiece.

Bespoke paint and bodywork was handled by Spikes Vintage Restoration and features a unique candy metal-flake paint.  The low slung stance is provided by custom underpinning and a subframe created by Dogback Beam Performance.

But that’s not all… You might have already guessed that this Ghia was also sporting air. Since Air Lift Performance doesn’t have a direct bolt-on application, the guys at Limebug do the heavy lifting, tailoring suspension for the aircooled world, which typically use universal air springs such as the D2500. — For the management side of things, David opted for Air Lift Performance’s 3P (3H would include the height sensors) and is enjoying the tech.
